Alaska Facts and History
Welcome to Alaska Facts and History. How much do you know about the Great Land? It's all about Alaska.
Iliamna Lake
Alaska Facts… How Many Lakes?
Did you know that Alaska has over 3 million unnamed natural lakes?
And there are about 3,197 officially named lakes.
Iliamna Lake
The largest lake in Alaska is Iliamna Lake, located in Southwest Alaska at the north end of the Alaska Peninsula between Kvichak Bay and Cook Inlet, about 100 miles from Seldovia, Alaska.
That’s a Lot of Water
Iliamna Lake is 77 miles long, up to 22 miles wide and has a depth of 988 feet.
Where Did the Lake Get Its Name?
The name Iliamna comes from the inland Dena’ina Athabascan name “Nila Vena” which means “island’s lake”.
How Does it Compare?
While Iliamna Lake is the largest in Alaska, it’s the 3rd largest lake in the entire United States and the 24th in all of North America.
Did You Know?
Residents around the lake, tell stories of sightings of an Iliamna Lake monster.
And while the stories are fun to hear around the campfire, the monster may just be a species of White Sturgeon, or a Pacific Sleeper shark… You decide.

I love Alaska history so really enjoyed reading about the lake. Thanks again!!
Here is an Alaskan fact. A true Alaskan in spirit and pride was Gov. Bill Egan. My father and he were friends and what i remember about him was his great memory! I had not seen Gov. Egan in about ten years and one day while riding my bike i saw him out on his lawn in Turnagain. I stopped to say hello and he said....."hello Rick, how's your father Bill?" I was surprised he remembered MY name. We talked for about ten minutes about the past, present and future for Alaska. That was the last time I saw Gov. Bill Egan but i still think of him ever so often. A true gentleman!
